Today's a special day on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) as we celebrate Birdman's birthday! A thoughtful gesture by someone set the tone for the day, with a banner strung between trees, a sweet surprise for the birthday boy.
The day began with a brisk 6-mile road walk to Seiad Valley, and I must say, I felt surprisingly energetic, catching up with my friends who had left before me. However, a wasp sting on my ankle through my sock quickly brought me back to reality, leaving me a little slower for the remainder of the walk.
Seiad Valley Cafe, known for its infamous pancake challenge, became the highlight of our journey. Posh Spice, ever the adventurer, took on the challenge of devouring five 'challenge-sized' pancakes within two hours. The stack of pancakes was an impressive sight, bigger than his head, and the entire cafe full of hikers gathered to witness this spectacle.
Posh Spice tackled the first pancake with gusto, finishing it within 20 minutes, but the second pancake proved more challenging. After 35 minutes, he conceded, and I can't say I blame him. Those pancakes were dense, and the challenge was no small feat.
After resupplying at the general store, we sat outside the cafe, digesting our meals. I opted for a refreshing Gatorade and an 'It's It' ice cream sandwich to beat the heat. The climb out of Seiad Valley was notorious for its brutality, with reports of blowdowns, a lack of water sources, and a trail that undulated, gaining and losing elevation. However, an alternative road walk offered a more pleasant experience, following a creek, abundant with blackberries, and even a waterfall and swimming hole.
I chose the road walk, joining Posh and a new hiking companion, Yoshi, for the entire stretch. It was a glorious experience, enjoying the blackberries, swimming in the hole, and filling our water bottles at the waterfall. We met up with Drom and Flash at the end, sharing a quick dinner before continuing on a few more miles. The sunset climb was surprisingly pleasant, with a cooler temperature and a beautiful sky. I might even admit to enjoying the golden hour hike, though I'll leave the emphasis on 'might'.
The climb was manageable, and we're looking forward to an easier couple of days ahead, heading towards Ashland. It's a much-needed respite, and I'm eager for it to arrive soon.
What makes this journey particularly fascinating is the community that forms along the trail. The support and camaraderie among hikers are palpable, and it's these shared experiences that make the PCT so special. From birthday surprises to pancake challenges, it's the little moments that create lasting memories.
In my opinion, it's these human connections and the shared love for the outdoors that make hiking trails like the PCT such a unique and rewarding experience.
As we continue our journey, I can't help but reflect on the power of community and the unexpected joys that lie ahead.
